Foyers

Welcome Home!

The foyer of your home sends you out into the world every morning and welcomes you back home at the end of the day. This space is the first impression for your guests and sets the stage for what is to come! Since there is not a lot of furniture in this space it is important that everything reinforces the statement you are trying to make.

The foyer is a high traffic area, so you will want to be sure that you address the function of the space as well as the aesthetics. You will need a high-quality rug since this will receive a good deal of wear and tear. Some form of table is nice and provides a great landing spot for purses and keys and a place for a welcoming lamp. The table will need to be sturdy; the last thing you want is something that can be easily knocked about with a dog’s tail or a rowdy quest! A large basket under the table is a good spot for shoes and slippers.

If you don’t have a powder room near by a mirror over the entry table/chest is a nice touch and offers a place for a last glance before heading out. The mirror will also reflect light and open up the space as well. A coat rack/umbrella stand is also convenient if the space doesn’t have a built-in coat closet.

If you have the space, a bench or chair offers a spot to put on and take off shoes.

So, what if you don’t have a designated foyer? No worries, create your own by placing a table, bench and mirror as near the front door as possible. You can also mount a shelf (12 inches deep) 40 inches up on the wall close to the door and use that space as your foyer. You could use a beautiful piece of stone or wood to create a luxurious look.

As a final send off for your guests think about having a quote or funny saying framed that will catch your guests eye as they head back out into the wild world!
