Changing the bedroom décor can be an exciting way to star the year off. A good place to start when putting a bedroom together is to think about mixing pieces that will visually compliment each other.
Think about similar shapes, lines and colors. A simple color palette makes for a calming bedroom. Soft textures will help create a space that will help you de-stress at the end of the day. Clean lines and uncluttered surfaces will bring a sense of order.

Adding a deep color on the bed wall makes the room feel immediately cozy and relaxing (but be sure to balance this with a lot of light color throughout the rest of the room). A grass cloth wallpaper behind the bed is a good way to add some texture to this wall as well. You will want to layer your texture between the rugs, bedding and window treatments; this will add depth and dimension.
If you go with bolder colors in the bedroom than use symmetry with the furnishings and accessories to help balance the space.

It is always a great idea to add some natural elements to any space; whether in the form of greenery, wood floors or a stone top on a dresser or night stand. Place a mirror so that it will reflect the natural light that is coming into the room.

A smaller bedroom that has multiple doors and windows can be a challenge. You can put the bed in front of a window, but you will want to add a wall of curtains behind the bed so that the window itself doesn’t compete with the design of the headboard. If the room is really small, consider using “skinnier” furniture! Use a full bed instead of a queen which will save 6 inches in width. Instead of 2 night stands use a short chest as a nightstand which will act as double duty. You can also put a chest in a walk-in closet to save wall space in the main room.

Speaking of nights stands. A rule of thumb is that they should be either 2 inches above the mattress, at the mattress or 2 inches below. Night stands don’t need to match but should be equivalent in scale and height. A small desk as a night stand is a great look and provides function as well.
Finally, lighting is a key factor in the bedroom. Replace a boring ceiling fixture with a large feature light in the middle of the room for an upscale effect. Don’t forget a good reading light on the night stand; the bottom of the shade should be about 20 inches above the mattress for it to be the most effective.
So now it’s time to turn off the light and have sweet dreams!
