Rugs

Feel like you are swimming in a sea of grey and cream? Most homes are grounded in a neutral (floors, walls and main furniture pieces) color palette. What better way to bring in some color and texture than with a great rug.

The goal of any rug is to visually anchor a seating group and define the space. If possible, you want to have all 4 legs of the furniture on the rug for the area. At a minimum at least, the front legs need to be on the rug. This will give the visual grounding that you are looking for and will eliminate the “floating” feeling that happens when the rug is sitting alone in the middle of a room! You really don’t want to buy a rug from just looking at a catalog or image on a screen; the colors are never true and it is also hard to determine the quality.

Try to leave 12-18” of floor showing all around the rug (in smaller rooms you can leave 7-12”). If the area is an unusual size create a custom size by purchasing carpet and having it cut and bound to the size needed.

Rugs are a great way to help muffle sound in a space that has hard finish floors. Consider layering several rugs to add texture and interest (i.e. a sisal down first with a softer pile on top or angled).

Now let’s talk about the different rug types:

Wool: This is the top of the line in rug materials. Wool holds it shape and resists dirt better than any other fiber and is easy to clean if it does get soiled.

Acrylic: This product closely resembles wool but are less expensive. Acrylic does tend to crush easier than wool and that should be considered if you are using them in a high traffic area.

Nylon: The product is the most popular and is very well priced. Nylon is strong and resilient, holds it shape and is stain resistant.

Polypropylene: Inexpensive, man-made fiber that is stain resistant. The fiber is great for outdoor use especially where there is water involved! And polypropylene is UV protected (resists fading).

Polyester: Well priced, stain resistant and holds its color well. However, this fiber is not a resilient and can crush easily so therefore would not be good in high traffic areas.

Hope I haven’t bored you with the details! Think of rugs like magnets, they pull the room together!
