Coffee or cocktail?
What’s your poison?
The most important thing you need to know about your coffee/cocktail table is its size. Your table should be in proportion to either the room it’s in or the furniture group that it is anchoring. You should be able to walk around all four sides comfortably.

Think about using an ottoman as a coffee table, add a tray and you now have a place for a snack and the ability to put your feet up! Remember you can also put several like objects together to create a custom piece (think of a pair of 18” cubes or double up on 2 rectangular pieces for a super-size look).

As to height, the table should be around the seat height for your sofa or chair (18 inches). The shape should correspond to the shape of the grouping. In other words, a square grouping gets either a square or round table and a rectangular grouping gets (you guessed) a rectangular or oval table.

If you have a rug in the space with an amazing design, you may want to consider a glass top table so that you won’t lose the “Wow” factor of the rug.

When it comes to accessorizing the table keep in mind if you plan to watch TV in this space you will want to keep your items relatively low, no one wants to strain to see over the great arrangement to watch their favorite show. Don’t forget, the coffee/cocktail table is not the catch all for unopened mail and left-over pizza boxes!
